Off-duty JeffCo Sheriff Department sergeant killed

An off-duty Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department sergeant was struck and killed while helping out at the scene of a multi-vehicle accident, north of Conifer on U.S. 285.

Fifteen-year veteran Sgt. Sean Renfro was directing traffic when he was killed.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, initially the driver of a Mitsubishi SUV had lost control and ran off the southbound side of the road, striking the side of the mountain.

Then two people in a truck stopped to offer aid to the driver of the SUV when their truck was rear-ended by a passenger sedan.

Troopers were investigating the crashes when an SUV traveling northbound lost control and crossed the highway, striking the off-duty deputy and another man who were standing in front of the truck.

Renfro died at the scene. The other man who was struck by the SUV was transported to the hospital along with two other people inside the truck.
