Pro-police rallies held Saturday in Denver, nationwide

Denver was one of many cities across the country this weekend showing support for law enforcement after increased criticism and scrutiny brought by recent fatal shootings.

A crowd of about 100 stood with officers during the “Blue Lives Matter” event at Civic Center Park. It included speeches, a moment of silence, bagpipe music and people holding signs thanking police for their dedication to a risky profession.

“It’s very positive,” said Jennifer Witowski, the event’s organizer. “Everyone is here for the right reason.”

“Blue Lives Matter” is a contrast to gatherings critical of police shootings, titled “Black Lives Matter.”

The Denver event, as did similar events throughout the nation, also remembered the two New York City officers killed last week. The funeral of one of those victims, Rafael Ramos, was held Saturday.

Denver’s event avoided tensions present during Ramos’ funeral when some officers supported him while others showed disapproval for his perceived backing of critics who believe officer shootings of civilians often are unjustified.

Pat Nading-Amman attended the Denver rally. She’s the widow of Bill Nading, an officer killed while on duty in 1971.

“I think we need to be very careful with this (subject),” she said, holding a picture of her late husband. “Future children are not going to want to be police officers — and we have to have officers.”
