Area readies for more snow

Some Colorado Springs-area residents shoveled and brushed away the remnants of snowfall from earlier in the week, and waited for more expected late Thursday night.

Sales were brisk at the few stores open on Christmas, as people stocked up on supplies.

Others enjoyed the sunny weather with a walk or a drive before sidewalks and streets became slippery.

Sheila Conway summed up the mood of many drivers.

“I just don’t like to drive in it,” she said. “I’m always afraid I’m going to wind up in a ditch.”

With Friday a regular work day for many, one woman lamented not even having the comfort of a vehicle.

“I’ll be back on the road catching the bus at about 5:30 a.m.,” said Michelle Martinez.

Police ask people to drive carefully over the weekend, especially in snowy conditions and around holiday light displays where traffic may become heavy.

Earlier on Thursday, strong winds made their presence felt. Several large limbs from a dead tree broke off and fell into a yard near 14th Street and Pikes Peak Avenue. The limbs barely missed the home but fell on a decorated tree.

Street crews in Colorado Springs were on standby if needed during the day and expected to start snow patrols at 8 p.m. Thursday.

“We (wanted) our workers to spend as much time as possible with their families on Christmas before sending them out,” said supervisor Jack Ladley.
