Heavy Snow Hits the Mountains

More than a foot of snow is expected to fall in the northwestern parts of our area, slowing down holiday travel through Monday.

Then SkyCast Snow Tracker is calling for a widespread area of more than a foot of snow to fall around Leadville, mainly in areas above 11,000 feet.

Leadville will see between six and twelve inches of snow. The area will also see winds between 15 and 30 mph, causing significant blowing and drifting of the snow.

The heavy snow will also create a high danger for avalanches and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center has issued an Avalanche Watch for areas north of Leadville.

With all of the snow that is expected, the National Weather Service office in Pueblo has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Lake County through 11 pm Monday.

Travel along Highway 24 – especially between Leadville and Minturn – will be very difficult.

Stay tuned to KRDO NewsChannel 13 and the StormTracker 13 Weather Team for further updates as the storm moves through the area.
