Fans celebrate CSU-Pueblo’s first football national title

Pueblo is rocking Saturday night as the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves won its first NCAA Division II Football National Championship.

When the fourth quarter ended, fans at Andy Mac’s Sports Grill chanted “C-S-U-P-“as they celebrated the historic victory for the university.

Wes Ursick graduated from CSU-Pueblo in 1986. He said this victory isn’t for only the football players but for anyone who is affiliated with the university.

“It’s one of the best things to happen to this community in a long time and it’s the first of many. We’re going to be back next year and win two in a row,” he said.

Justin Hutchings was a student at CSU-Pueblo in 1998. He said the celebration isn’t only going to last Saturday night.

“This is awesome, we’ve had a great time, and we are going to party. It’s going to be a blast. We’re happy for CSU-Pueblo and it is electric here tonight,” he said.

On top of the ThunderWolves’ first national championship, the team has also won four consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles.
