Nonprofits scramble after rescue mission cancels Christmas dinner

Posada says it is looking for volunteers and donations after learning that the Pueblo Rescue Mission will not be providing a Christmas Meal at Union Depot this year. It says the soup kitchen and salvation army will be closed.

Posada has agreed to provide the meal and organize the volunteers so that needy families in Pueblo won’t go without a Christmas meal. It is expected to serve about 1,000 people and says it cannot use shelter dollars to pay for the meal.

Volunteers are what Posada says it needs most to make the meal a success. It is looking for people to cook, serve, greet and clean during the meal and to set up and tear down before and after the dinner.

To volunteer: Call 719-545-8776 between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday 12/19, Monday 12/22 or Tuesday 12/23 to talk to a live person. Leave a message if you call outside of those dates and times.

Donations of trash bags, aluminum serving pans, aluminum foil, coffee, canned green beans, large hams, salad mix, salad dressing, bacon bits, butter, rolls, gravy mix and ice are also needed.

To donate: Drop off donations at 225 Colorado Ave. in Pueblo.
*Stipulate Christmas meal on any donation you drop off.
