Haircuts help raise awareness about mental illness

Dozens of people got haircuts at Colorado College Tuesday to raise money and awareness for a local chapter of a mental health organization.

The National Association of Mental Illness, Veda Salon & Spa and Colorado College teamed up to organize a “haircut-a-thon.” Veda hair stylists gave $10 haircuts at the college, and the money was given to NAMI. Organizers said more than raising money, it was about raising awareness about mental illness.

“A lot of times people living with mental illness or people that have family members of someone with mental illness often feel alone, they feel stigmatized, they feel embarrassed. Coming to NAMI, you get this sense of community in that you’re not alone, and we’re all here in this together,” NAMI volunteer program coordinator Lynn Shull said.

NAMI’s goal is to educate, support and advocate for people living with mental illness and their families. For more information click here.
