Black Forest Fire Board selects new chief

The Black Forest Fire Board selected a new fire chief on Wednesday night after an extensive interview process.

They chose Bryan J. Jack. He is currently the Simla Town Administrator. He previously spent 19 years in the fire service including time with USDA Forest Service and the Tri-Lakes Monument Fire Protection District.

Assistant Chief James Rebitski was acting as interim chief after former Fire Chief Bob Harvey resigned. Board members applauded Rebitski on his job as interim fire chief. People who attended the meeting also applauded him.

In June, Harvey placed himself on medical leave citing post traumatic stress disorder. He made the announcement before a special meeting called by the fire board. On its agenda was a closed-door meeting to discuss “personnel matters related to the fire chief.”

During a special district election in May, all fire board members up for re-election were voted out. They were replaced by three firefighters. Some of the newly elected board members were behind a petition calling for Harvey’s dismissal earlier this year.

Jack said he is looking forward to starting a new chapter at Black Forest Fire Department.

He will officially move into the fire chief position on Jan. 5.
