Man acquitted of cop assault in ‘Make My Day’ case

A man accused of assaulting a police officer trying to arrest him is free after invoking a Colorado law that allows homeowners to use force to protect themselves.

A jury in Cortez, Colorado acquitted 38-year-old Shane French of assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest Monday after 3 hours of deliberations.

French was accused of stabbing officer Casey Eubanks in February after police responded to a 911 call from French’s mother, who said he was being verbally abusive.

The Cortez Journal reports Eubanks testified that French injured him as he held French in a “bear hug”, picked him off his feet and threw him down the ground as he resisted arrest. The wound wasn’t serious and Eubanks testified, with a grin, that it was treated with a Band-Aid.
