Citizen boards flex muscle over new election laws

Pueblo County officials finally certified November’s election after a month of resistance from conservative members of a citizen election board.

The conservative members had refused to approve the election results over concerns about Colorado’s new election system that requires mail ballots for everyone and same-day voter registration.

On Wednesday, the board unanimously approved the results after representatives from the Colorado Secretary of State’s office went to Pueblo to go over their concerns.

The delay in certifying results had officials on edge over how officeholders would be sworn in. Boulder County is now the only place in the state where results have not been certified.

In both counties, the election boards have members from the American Constitution Party who have sided with Republicans in opposition of the new election laws.
