Cold weather keeps Pueblo firefighters occupied
Pueblo firefighters are kept busy when the temperature drops.
In November, there were 15 structure fires.
Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Shelton said appliances like heaters and extension cords have led to fires. He also said this time of the year could be dangerous for firefighters.
“You know you get a fire truck which is relatively heavy and hard to stop them, so we emphasize safety and safe driving. In the winter time it takes us longer to get to a call, which gives a fire a chance to grow before we get there,” he said.
Shelton said even though crews can’t prevent the fires, they are ready for them.
“We’re always prepared, that’s what we do, that’s our job is to be prepared not only for structure fires but all hazards. We’re constantly talking about safety, tactics and what’s the best way to approach a fire,” he said.
There have been 80 structure fires so far, that’s up from 78 all of last year.
