One person killed in Pueblo officer-involved shooting

One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night in Pueblo.

It happened beside a Loaf ‘N Jug, near the intersection of 4th Street and Troy Avenue in the city’s east side, police said.

The man who died has been identified as Jon Jaquez, 26, of Pueblo.

Pueblo police and sheriff’s deputies arrived at the gas station, looking for a person of interest in an assault that happened earlier that day. When they arrived, they found an armed man. A law enforcement official fired at the man and he died at the scene. More details on what led to the shooting haven’t been released.

It’s unclear if Jaquez was the person of interest or someone associated with the person of interest. Police said the assault happened on the 1000 block of Cypress St. and left a 23-year-old man hospitalized and in serious condition.

The 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Team, the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and several other law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting.

Sgt. Eric Gonzales said investigators are working to identify whether it was a police officer or a sheriff’s deputy who shot the victim.

Gonzales said the timing of the shooting “couldn’t be worse” in light of what’s happening in Ferguson but made it a point to say the victim wasn’t black.
