Turkey mission: thousands of meals in 48 hours
Most of us know cooking for Thanksgiving can be stressful, especially if you have a big dinner table.
But- what about preparing turkey dinner for thousands?
That’s exactly what soldiers at Fort Carson will be doing for the next few days.
“I was asking them, how long does it take to cook one of these turkeys? It takes two and a half hours and they have 350 turkeys to cook up for us,” said Richard Larson with the Salvation Army.
It’s a tall order, but if anyone can handle it, it’s the Fort Carson Culinary Academy.
“They’ve been doing it for 24 years. They know what they’re doing,” said Larson.
Their mission? Preparing 3,000 meals in 48 hours.
“It’s a challenge but once the schedule was made, we got the plan down and we just execute,” said Kevin Tolefree, a Fort Carson soldier busy cooking on Tuesday.
It’s the 24th year the soldiers have teamed up with the Salvation Army to provide Thanksgiving meals to those who might otherwise go without.
“I think the truth is, people do make a difference and others matter. This is a great way of showing that,” said Larson.
“I’m looking forward to Thanksgiving Day when they pick up all the food. Just seeing smiles on everybody’s faces and everybody happy like they should be,” said Tolefree.
The food will be distributed in Manitou Springs, at the Fountain Valley Senior Center and at the Salvation Army location on Yuma Street in Colorado Springs.
