People all over Pueblo volunteer their time to give back to those in need

It was a day for people to give back in Pueblo.

The 19th annual Tom and Louie’s Cupboard Food Drive happened at the Colorado State Fairgrounds.

The organizer said it is a living memorial for two Catholic priests.

Fathers Thomas Scheets and Louis Stovik were both stabbed to death at St. Leander Church in 1996 in Pueblo.

About 600 families received meals and hundreds of volunteers were there to hand them out.

Most of the volunteers were students who are going to high school in Pueblo County.

Pueblo West High School student Evan Ward said this is one way for each school to put rivalries aside for a good cause.

“When it comes to T.L.C. and helping the community we kind of come together as a school,” he said.

The organization found out which families needed food from schools, churches and agencies in Pueblo.

Tom and Louie’s Cupboard wasn’t the only organization handing out food Saturday.

The engines roared as bikers from all over Pueblo wanted to give needy people a happy Thanksgiving.

Close to 500 families received meals Saturday in the 25th annual Pueblo Turkey Run.

Organizer Dave Rodriguez said there isn’t an age limit when it comes to giving back.

“The community comes together for this. It’s a big drive for us bikers and like I said, you will see little kids to high school kids to elderly bikers, young bikers, all sorts and the community to come out and help,” he said.

People started collecting food last month.

But not everyone handed out food — a group of volunteers wanted to help clean people’s yards.

Hundreds of people grabbed lawn tools and garbage bags for the 16th annual Rake Up Pueblo event.

The Senior Resource Development Agency hosted it.

The event is aimed at helping people who are unable to clean up their own yards.

A volunteer said this is her way of giving back to the community.

“These people out here can’t do it and this is what we’re out here for is to help people who can’t do it,” Aaliyah Sandoval said.

More than 100 yards were cleaned.
