Mountain Shadows community dedicates fire memorial

It’s been more than two years since the Waldo Canyon Fire destroyed more than 300 homes.

The community came together Saturday at a special memorial dedication in Mountain Shadows Park.

Colorado Springs city officials dedicated the memorial in honor of those who kept the community safe during the 2012 wildfire.

“It’s just so uplifting to be able to come back and to see this symbol of hope and renewal,” Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach said. “It’s just heartwarming.”

A hiking trail was also dedicated in memory of Bill and Barbara Everett, who lost their lives in the fire.

Bill Everett used his technology skills to benefit international schools.

“He repaired 60 to 70 computers that are now in rural schools in Mexico being used by poor children,” Warren Hill said. “He did it all for free.”

Adrian Perez traveled from Mexico to attend the memorial dedication. He worked with Everett to place refurbished computers into classrooms.

“A lot of people, a lot of families are thankful,” Perez said. “It’s a big impact, and we’re honored and thankful to be here today.”
