People in Pueblo hold candles in remembrance of missing students in Mexico

People in Pueblo held a candlelight vigil Thursday night to remember the 43 students who are missing in Mexico.

The students went missing Sept. 26.

According to the Associated Press, the students went to a teacher’s college and their buses were hijacked by a criminal group that has ties to the mayor in Iguala. The AP also reported that prosecutors said there is evidence to show the criminal group killed and burned the bodies. The remains have been sent to a laboratory in Austria to identify if they belong to the students.

Sol Tafoya was part of the vigil. She said since the students were in college the situation hits close to home.

“I think a lot of people can relate to what’s going on right now because as students all they were doing is just trying to voice their opinions, stand for what they believe in and it’s extremely unfair that you can’t even do that because now there is the fear of something may happen to you,” she said.

Tafoya said the vigil was also a chance to bring awareness to the growing violence in Mexico.
