Local charities seeking turkey donations ahead of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is next week, and it’s time to start thinking about turkey.

Several charities are working together to make sure everyone enjoys a warm Thanksgiving meal.

The Marian House Soup Kitchen hosted its first-ever “Stuff the Bird” event Monday. People dropped off frozen turkeys to be sent to local families and food banks.

“It was as great opportunity to show our kids how important it is to give back,” Vanessa Barton said. Her family donated two turkeys. “Anytime that you approach a holiday, you wonder about children and families who are going without some of these things.”

Catholic Charities is working with Care and Share, and Springs Rescue Mission to distribute as many turkeys as possible. Volunteers say they are hoping to receive 1,000 turkeys.

“It’s not only a way to get more turkeys for the people who need it most, but it’s a way that we as organizations can really show the community that everybody is working together,” said event coordinator Rochelle Schlortt.

The Marian House will accept turkeys for the next several weeks. You can drop turkeys off at 14 W Bijou Street during normal business hours.
