Snow crews will continue to work through night ahead of morning commute

City and state snow trucks will work through the night ahead Thursday morning’s commute.

The Colorado Department of Transportation will have 40 trucks in Teller and El Paso counties laying down de-icer, and a sand and salt mix.

A spokesperson for C-DOT said crews are on snow shifts, working 12 hours on and then 12 hours off. Trucks will be on the road through Friday.

The Colorado Springs City Streets division manager, Corey Farkas, said he is waiting to see what the next system brings in before deciding how many of his workers will be out on the road.

He said his team started off behind in their fight to keep roads clear because a flash freeze set in Monday during rush hour and his trucks were stuck in traffic. Once the roads cleared, trucks were able to get a handle of road conditions. He said now his team is doing a good job on the road.

“I think tomorrow morning, barring any weather coming through tonight that I am not expecting at this point, you never know, it could change, but I am expecting tomorrow morning to be a good commute,” said Farkas.

Last winter there was a shortage of de-icer. Farkas said this year the city has renewed its contracts with three different suppliers so it will be OK if one company can’t deliver everything promised.
