Familiar face in Springs announces run for mayor

A familiar face in Colorado Springs government is making it her mission to get back to the mayor’s office.

The city’s first female mayor, Mary Lou Makepeace announced Tuesday she running for the job she had more than a decade ago. She served as mayor from 1997 to 2003. Makepeace is building her latest campaign on collaboration.

“My vision is that we have civic leaders working together for the betterment of our community,” Makepeace said.

Lindy Conter has lived in the Colorado Springs almost 40 years. A longtime activist, Conter is tired of the bickering between current Mayor Steve Bach and the city council. Conter believes a fresh perspective from Makepeace will change that.

“Instead of being divisive, it is cooperative, it is collaborative, that’s the way she will lead,” Conter said.

Joining Makepiece in the race next spring will El Paso County Commissioner Amy Lathen, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers and Colorado Springs real estate agent, Justine Herring.

The mayoral election is set for next April. No word yet on whether Bach will seek re-election.
