City’s plan for next round of snow

More snow means crews will stay out treating roads tonight.

Colorado Springs’ Streets Division will have more than 30 trucks on standby Wednesday night, getting ready for the morning drive Thursday.

Patience is key when driving day after day in the snow.

“Just drive slower than usual,” said Adam Lewis, a driver in Colorado Springs.

He doesn’t drive a massive SUV and admits it is tough to get around the side streets.

“Today since all this new snow came down, I’d say it’s pretty bad,” he said.

But he’s not the blaming the city.

“There’s enough snowplows, there just isn’t enough good drivers out there,” he said. “Today I had to swerve, somebody pulled out in front of me and I had to swerve half a car length away from them.”

Side streets, especially in the south are slick, even two days after the storm. Transportation crews say we can blame something called a flash freeze.

“Two hundred square miles of Colorado Springs froze simultaneously, which makes it difficult,” said Corey Farkas, city streets manager, Colorado Springs Streets Division. “It doesn’t matter if you have a thousand trucks out at that time.”

It is admittedly dangerous if you live on one of those impromptu ice rinks.

“We’ve got material down, we’re going to let that material do its job,” he said.

There’s not much choice but to exercise patience and preparation just a little longer.

“In Colorado, weather can change in less than 24 hours – in 12 hours,” Lewis said.
