Colorado Springs man with cancer gets his wish to fish at Lake Pueblo

It is a fishing trip a Colorado Springs man will never forget, but it’s not about the fish he caught, but making a lifetime of memories.

The wind howled and waves were crashing into the rocks at Lake Pueblo. These are not the ideal conditions for fishing, but for George Richter, 52, it was just right.

“The weather doesn’t bother me at all, it’s beautiful out here,” he said.

But not everything is perfect, Richter has brain cancer and diabetes, he has to sit in a wheelchair and has less than six months to live.

One of his final wishes is to go on a fishing trip at Lake Pueblo and the Dream Foundation, a group that grants wishes to people with life threatening illnesses, made it happen.

“It’s George’s day and I just want to and try to make sure he has fun,” Alex Zipp said. He was the fishing guide for Richter’s trip.

But the trip is more than just casting a line.

“I want to be with my kids. I didn’t want to go too far. I never get to see them, they are always working they are always taking care of their family. I love them to death,” Richter said.

His family said these are memories they will cherish forever.

“It’s about spending time with our dad and that’s the best part is spending time with him,” George’s son, Joshua Richter, said.

The Dream Foundation grants about 2,500 wishes a year.
