Gas leak prompts evacuations in downtown Pueblo

A gas leak in a building at 4th and Santa Fe in Pueblo forced road closures and evacuations Friday.

Carl Winder reports that 4th is now open.

Buildings within a one block radius of the leak were evacuated. Evacuees were taken to the nearby chamber of commerce building. All of the evacuations have been lifted, except for the building where the leak happened.

The evacuations and road closures were ordered after a high concentration of natural gas was detected in what appears to be a vacant building, prompting fears of an explosion.

The fire department said the problem originated near a gas meter inside the building, which is undergoing renovation. The exact cause is not known. Utility workers are investigating and checking the system for any other problems.
