2 Anglo candidates to face off in Spanish debate
Two candidates for Colorado’s sixth congressional district are facing off in a historic Spanish-language debate.
Organizers say the encounter Thursday between Republican Rep. Mike Coffman and his Democratic challenger Andrew Romanoff will be the first time two congressional candidates who are not of Hispanic descent have debated in Spanish. The debate for the Aurora-area congressional seat will be at the Univision studios in Denver.
The race for Coffman’s seat is one of the most competitive in the nation. The district is very diverse. Coffman has tacked toward the center on immigration issues and has been studying Spanish. Romanoff worked in Costa Rica as a Peace Corps volunteer and is fluent.
