Trial to start for man accused of dismembering mom

A trial is getting underway for a Centennial man accused of poisoning and dismembering his mother after she removed him from her will.

Jury selection is expected to start Tuesday in the case of 25-year-old Ari Liggett, who was charged with murder in the death of 56-year-old Beverly Liggett. Police say they found him in October 2012 driving around with his mother’s remains in the back of an SUV.

He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. A state mental hospital found him competent to stand trial.

Police reports say Liggett told officers he found his mother dead on the floor of their home and that she’d committed suicide by taking potassium cyanide. He said he was trying to put her body in a storage shed when he was arrested.
