Colorado Springs Airport Terminal Turns 20

It has been 20 years since the Colorado Springs Airport opened its new terminal with a lot of fanfare.

Since then there have been a lot of changes.

When it opened on Oct. 22nd, 1994, 10 airlines were taking more than one million passengers in and out of Colorado Springs.

But airline mergers combined with competition from Denver International Airport have cut the number of travelers out of the Springs to a projected 650,000 this year.

To bring some of those passengers back to the airport, city officials are trying to sell Colorado Springs in markets that offer direct flights to and from the city.

Heather Lenard is the marketing and communications manager for the Colorado Springs Airport. She said, “with a partnership with the Convention and Visitors Bureau we’re doing an advertising campaign for the Colorado Springs area in the Seattle market.”

The airport is also trying to reach out to local travelers by offering free long-term parking during November and December.
