Strong opinions heard at Amendment 67 rallies

Amendment 67 is a hot topic that has people divided in Colorado.

Rallies happened in Pueblo today for people who are against and support the proposed amendment.

If approved, an unborn baby would be counted in Colorado’s Criminal Code and the state’s Wrongful Death Act.

Dee Waite is a supporter of Amendment 67. She said it would give women more rights.

“If a criminal act happens against a woman and her baby is killed we can prosecute fully for the baby,” she said.

Waite said it would also bring justice for an unborn child.

“Brady Surovik was Heather Surovik’s unborn baby. Since Brady never took a breath outside the womb, criminal actions or criminal charges couldn’t be brought against the drunk driver,” she said.

But another group wants its message heard, saying the amendment would take rights away from women.

Civil rights leader Doloris Huerta said if the amendment passes, it would make women who want an abortion into criminals.

“It would make any possible termination of a baby a criminal act, even a miscarriage,” she said.

Election Day is Nov. 4.
