Sibling musicians find healing through music

Drake Brada-Pitts, 23, is a San Diego college student majoring in music composition. For the past year he’s been battling a recurrence of synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Drake’s sister, Kiersty, 21, is also pursuing a career in music as a singer/songwriter.

Being musicians, the siblings turned to music as an outlet for dealing with their feelings. They wrote a song called “Fighting for You” for the Nikolas Ritschel Foundation, a charity that sends college students with cancer on respite trips with their families.

The duo hopes it will serve as an anthem for others dealing with cancer, so they won’t feel so alone. Their mother, Deborah, believes this tough situation has made the brother and sister team much closer. “When the cancer returned we were devastated, but in our family we try to focus on what we want, not what we fear, so we’ve done everything possible to counter the bad with positive attitudes and memorable experiences,” Deborah said. “Writing this song was an extension of that because music is healing.”
