Commissioners want to tighten down the grow rules in Pueblo County

Pueblo County wants to limit the amount of marijuana plants you grow on your property.

The County Commissioners met today to discuss an ordinance that would let you grow no more than 18 plants.

State law says that up to six plants can be grown per person. Commissioner Sal Pace said since a doctor can give extended plant counts to people who need it and caregivers can have multiple patients, people can go beyond the six-plant limit.

Pace said it can be hard to keep track of which plants are legal or illegal on someone’s property, which is why commissioners want to limit it to 18.

The commissioner also said an incident made people in the county question the amount of marijuana grown on a property.

“There have been concerns, like in the city of Pueblo, where a man had plants in his backyard and it attracted local teenagers. He ended up shooting one of kids with a BB gun,” Pace said.

But people at the meeting also voiced their opinions.

Mike Lemon uses marijuana for medicinal purposes. He said he can’t go to a dispensary to buy medical marijuana because it is expensive. But he does have a caregiver who gives him marijuana. He said the proposed marijuana grow limit is unfair.

“If the county provides a grow limit my caregiver won’t be able to provide for me,” Lemon said.

The commissioners, after hearing concerns about the proposed grow rules, decided to hold off on a vote until Dec. 10.
