Pink out in Pueblo for breast cancer awareness

The Arkansas Riverwalk became a sea of people wearing pink Saturday.

Hundreds of people showed their support at the fifth annual Strides Against Breast Cancer.

The American Cancer Society said besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women.

Even though people were having fun wearing pink, the bright color does bring awareness toward the disease.

Debbie Strankman is battling breast cancer.

“It was like, ‘Doctor, you need to walk out of the room and come back in with something different.’ You just can’t believe it,” she said .

Strankman said she is going through treatment to beat the disease.

Her family and friends created a group for the event called Team Debbie.

One of Strankman’s nephews said he prays every night that she gets better and he calls her every night asking how his aunt is doing.

Even though Strankman is battling cancer, Sharlene Hayden is beat the disease. She ran a booth at the event for breast cancer survivors.

“We are trying to rid the world of breast cancer,” she said.

Strankman hopes to join Hayden as a survivor.

She said even though the disease is going against her body, she is not going down without a fight.

“I have many years to go, you know, I can’t be out of these peoples lives, and they can’t be out of mine,” she said

The American Cancer Society said one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
