Man dies after shootout with Fort Collins police

The Ft. Collins Coloradoan reports that a man died after he and a police officer were in a shootout Sunday afternoon in the city.

Fort Collins Police Services responded to a welfare check about 3:45 p.m. near the intersection of Drake Road and Shields Street in the central part of the city.

The newspaper reports that the officer saw the man lying in a stairwell of Cimarron Square Townhouses. As the officer approached, the man pulled out a gun and shot the officer. The officer shot back, striking the man.

Fort Collins Police Services spokesman Cory Christensen says the officer was struck in his bulletproof vest, which patrol officers in Fort Collins are required to wear.

The officer and man shot, whose names weren’t released, were taken by ambulance to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland.
