Grandparents helping elementary school students in Pueblo

People who are over 60 years old are acting as grandparents to help elementary school students.

The Foster Grandparent Program has been in Pueblo County for more than 25 years.

The group is sponsored by the Senior Resource Development Agency of Pueblo.

The program is meant to help students understand the teachers’ curriculum.

Marie Vigil is a member of the program. She said she looks forward to going to the school every day.

“When you get out and about, out of the school and they yell,’ Grandma Marie,’ I’m like oh wow! You turn around and you are like, oh my God, cause I started in 2011, so seeing those those kids, it’s fascinating,” she said.

People who are part of the program spend 15-30 hours in the schools each week, and they only help elementary schools in Pueblo County.
