Water shut off at Manitou Springs complex

Residents at a troubled local apartment complex lost their water service Wednesday because of the owner’s unpaid bill, but got temporary housing and the possibility of a new owner.

After two delays in the past week, Manitou Springs finally shut off water to the 22-unit Becker’s Lane Lodge. Residents gathered to watch as two men lifted manholes, reached down and closed valves.

Shortly thereafter, police posted notices on each door, informing residents that the units are considered unsanitary and ordering tenants to move out by 5 p.m. Friday or face a misdemeanor arrest.

Some residents already have moved out because they could afford to, or had family and friends who could help. Many of the remaining residents are poor, elderly, have medical needs or don’t want to leave.

However, there were positive developments Wednesday — thanks to tireless behind-the-scenes work by city Councilman Sarge MacDonald.

MacDonald said that by Wednesday evening, he’d found temporary shelter for all remaining tenants. At least one family is staying at a motel he manages.

“The goal is to get them a week’s worth of shelter,” he said. “While we get the situation here figured out.”

MacDonald provided a truck and manpower to help residents move to their new locations.

MacDonald also revealed that an unidentified man has offered to buy the property from the current owner. Under the prospective new ownership, residents would return to the complex after it had been cleaned up and renovated, he said.

“We’re trying to accelerate the buying process,” MacDonald said. “If (both sides) can come to terms on a price, I’m willing to go before the city and offer my support.”

In another encouraging development, residents said the electricity won’t be turned off as feared.

Resident Lisa White spoke for many of her neighbors.

“I love this place,” she said. “I love Manitou (Springs).”
