Nearly two-thirds of erroneous licenses returned

Colorado officials say nearly two-thirds of the driver’s licenses mistakenly sent to non-citizens have been returned.

The Denver Post reported Wednesday that 335 of the licenses have been sent back, or 64 percent of the 524 that were distributed.

They were issued under a new program allowing non-citizens to get a license regardless of their legal status. The licenses are supposed to be labeled “Not Valid For Federal Identification, Voting or Public Benefit Purposes.”

However, the 524 licenses were the type issued to citizens. State officials and a contractor blamed a software error.

Contractor MorphoTrust USA says it is working to retrieve all the licenses.
