911 recordings released in officer involved shooting

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office has released the 911 recordings from a shooting that involved an off-duty Pueblo police officer.

The incident began at around 9:45 p.m. on September 8, 2014 when Sgt. Shelly Taylor was driving home from work.

Taylor said that she was driving southbound on W. McCulloch Blvd. when a red sports car sped up from behind and aggressively passed her vehicle along with two other vehicles.

The driver of the sports car was later identified as Christina Rose Furber, 26.

Taylor said the sports car turned onto Avenida del Oro, followed by another car. She said she decided to follow the sports car because she was concerned that it was being followed.

The car that was behind the red sports car eventually turned onto another road. Taylor continued to follow the sports car to Wild Wind Place. She said that the car pulled into a driveway and began doing donuts in the field north of the home. She says the car then drove behind a large metal building that was located behind the home.

Taylor said that she then pulled into the driveway and called in to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s office Communications Center.

A total of two 911 calls were placed by Taylor. Most of the first call is calm. Taylor can be heard asking Furber questions and responding to her answers. At the very end of the call, Taylor can be heard telling Furber to stop going through her purse. Taylor asks Furber to give her the purse. At this point, the call disconnects.

The second 911 call is placed about one minute later. In it, Taylor says that Furber was able to get a revolver out of her purse and fire several rounds towards the officer. Taylor said she returned fire, but she didn’t know whether Furber was hit. Taylor was not injured.

Furber ran off into the darkness and Taylor sought cover and requested back up, because she didn’t know where Furber had gone. Deputies spent all night searching for Furber without any luck.

At 6:58 the next morning, a 9-1-1 call came in from a nearby home. The homeowner, Jeff Villanueva, said there was someone hiding in the trunk of his vehicle, which was parked in the garage.

The SWAT team was called in. They determined that Furber was in the trunk of the car deceased. She had been shot once in the head.

The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office later ruled that Furber’s death was consistent with a suicide.
