911 hero award recipient credited with saving mom’s life

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa presented the 911 hero award to a 9-year-old girl whose quick action saved her mother’s life.

Jewels Wozniak’s mom collapsed at 1:25 p.m. on July 9, 2014.

Jewels called 9-1-1 and instructed her younger brother to unlock the front door so that first responders could get in. She stayed with her mother and followed all of the medical instructions provided to her by the dispatcher. Help arrived eight minutes later.

The sheriff’s office says Jewels demonstrated maturity and calmness throughout the entire 9-1-1 call.

The 9-1-1 for Kids Local 9-1-1 Heroes program was established in 1999. The purpose of the award is to recognize heroic youngsters who called 9-1-1 to save a life or property or to report a crime.
