Denver area students protest history proposal
More suburban Denver high school students are protesting a proposal to emphasize patriotism in Advanced Placement history classes.
Students from four schools walked out of class Thursday in the fourth straight day of demonstrations. The Denver Post reports that about 1,000 students, including many from Columbine High School, lined a busy intersection and a pedestrian bridge across the street.
The students are upset about a school board proposal to create a curriculum review committee that would examine documents used in AP history classes to make sure they promote citizenship and patriotism and don’t encourage civil disorder.
School board president Ken Witt says he thinks students are being used as pawns by teachers, who are unhappy with the history proposal as well as a new pay plan.
