Volunteers create homes for our heroes in Colorado Springs
To veterans like Thomas Yant, construction is the sound of new beginnings.
“They basically saved my life that’s how I feel about it, on several occasions, by allowing me come in there and letting me get my life back together and started again. It’s a wonderful organization,” said Yant.
It was hard to miss “Team Depot” on Wednesday.
The group partnered with Rebuilding Together Colorado Springs to fix up apartments built back in the late ’60s.
They were giving 10 veterans and their families a place to live and get back on their feet.
“They’re not just here going through the paces. Just by looking at them you can tell their heart is in it,” said Yant.
Among all the hard workers was found another veteran.
“I’ve managed to not step in my paint so far, but the day is still young. Even on active duty you realize how tough it is for a lot of our service members just to survive day to day,” said Eddie Fishburne, both a veteran and a volunteer.
“It’s going to make such a difference in so many peoples’ lives. It really will,” said Yant.
Wednesday’s work in Colorado Springs is a part of Home Depot’s fourth annual Celebration of Service campaign, transforming more than a thousand homes for veterans across the country from 9/11 to Veterans Day.
