Rain expected to taper off around Durango

More rain is falling in southwestern Colorado but the wet weather is expected to decrease later Monday.

Heavy rainfall caused floods and mudslides in the Durango area Sunday after about 2 inches of rain fell in some places. That’s about as much rain as normally falls during the entire month of September.

The Durango Herald reports that some of the heaviest flooding happened near where the deluge lifted an 800-pound concrete cover off a clogged storm drain. In downtown Durango, cars were engulfed in branches, mud and debris.

U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango was temporarily shut down because of mudslides.
