Teenager accused of killing Fort Carson soldier, pregnant wife in court Tuesday

Mayco January is accused of killing a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife.

Police say staff sergeant David Dunlap and his wife Whitney walked into their home during a burglary in January of 2013.

Police say Macyo January was inside and shot and killed the two.

One woman who was in the courtroom on Wednesday said the murder trial hits close to home. Not only because she has kids in the military, but also because this community has a strong military presence.

“The Army is a part of me, I worked there years ago and when I see the Army guy that got killed serving our country. I can’t really believe this. My kids are military. They’re across the eastern part of the U.S. so it’s kind of a worry when you’re kids are around you and this heinous crime happens,” said Cecelia Greenhalgh.

January’s defense is arguing that he stumbled upon the crime scene and then ran away because he thought people would think he’s guilty.
