UPDATE: Neighbors say woman killed man over septic tank access

A man is dead and a woman is in custody after a shooting in the 9800 block of Calhan Highway. It was reported at 12:21 p.m. Monday (9/15/14).

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says there is one victim. His death is being investigated as a homicide and his name has not yet been released.

Deputies arrested Heather Neville, 59, on suspicion of first-degree murder Monday.

Scott Hurd lives on the property. He said there are three trailer homes on the property and two septic tank hook ups. He said Neville was living in one of the trailers with her friend.

Hurd said the women were angry that they did not have unlimited access to one of the septic tank hook ups. They were only a few hours away from fixing the problem.

“They decided for whatever reason they had to dump today and they were going to dump over at my clean out and I wasn’t here to move it,” said Hurd. “We were in town getting the parts when we got a phone call. We heard arguing in the background and the next thing we didn’t hear the gunshot but all we heard was the moaning.”

He said there has been tension building.

“Apparently she pulled a gun on me when we had the argument but I never saw the gun or I would have had a conversation about pulling guns on people. This would have been the problem last week and I would have been the one dead,” said Hurd.

Investigators say there were five children on the property when the shooting happened. None of them were hurt.

“They are pretty traumatized by all the events that have been going on here in the last week or two,” said Hurd.

The sheriff’s office says there is no threat to the community.
