Pony rescued from well in Black Forest

A 600-pound pony looking for a snack ended up needing rescue from two fire departments Saturday.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. at a home on Swan Road near the Vollmer Road intersection.

According to the Black Forest Fire Department, the pony wandered into a well house looking for hay that sometimes was stored there and fell 12 feet through a particle board covering a concrete foundation housing the well machinery.

Firefighters said the pony’s owner sedated it to keep it calm during the rescue.

With the help of the heavy rescue unit from the Colorado Springs Fire Department, firefighters used rope and pulleys to lift the pony to safety in about 90 minutes.

The pony had some visible scratches and bruises but seemed fine.

The pony’s owner declined comment.
