Officials: Hunter dies after fall near Aspen
Authorities say a hunter injured in a fall has died after being rescued by helicopter from a peak near Aspen.
The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that it received a call around 6:15 a.m. Sunday from a climber who spotted the injured man on North Maroon Peak, about 11 miles south of Aspen.
The climber quickly descended to get cellphone reception. The sheriff’s office says the hunter was found at about 11,200 feet in elevation.
Members of Mountain Rescue Aspen reached the victim via a helicopter, which airlifted him to a hospital. He later died of his injuries.
The Denver Post reports that the 42-year-old man fell 60 to 80 feet.
Officials say the county coroner would release the hunter’s name pending notification of family.
