Man arrested for DUI on bike-race course

A Carbondale man is accused of driving drunk on a road closed for the USA Pro Challenge bike race.

The incident happened Monday afternoon when 47-year-old Steven Hugill allegedly drove past a Pitkin County sheriff’s deputy who was keeping traffic off the McLain Flats section of the race.

The Aspen Daily News reports that the deputy told Hugill to park his vehicle because the road was closed for the race. Hugill continued toward Aspen, and when stopped by another deputy, the officer noticed he had an open bottle of beer in the console.

A portable breath test allegedly showed Hugill had a blood-alcohol content of 0.112. The newspaper reported that Hugill was trying to drive to the Aspen airport.

The incident did not affect the race.
