Open carry group’s plan to rally in Houston neighborhood causes controversy
A gun rights advocacy group in Texas is getting some backlash over its plans to rally in a Houston neighborhood this weekend.
David Amad with Open Carry Texas says it has held two thousand similar rallies around the state, and on Saturday, they will rally in Houston’s 5th Ward.
The group’s decision to rally in the historically black neighborhood has some, like community activist Quanell X, upset. “Coming like this is totally unacceptable. So if you do come, I guarantee you we will not bring a butter knife to a gun fight.” he told KPRC-TV.
Amad told KPRC that his groups message is simply to educate all Americans about gun rights. “The black community has got its butt kicked for quite some time, we’re going there to help with that, to help put a stop to that, why in the world wouldn’t he want us to come?” he said.
“If this is about gun rights, we can educate our own people about gun rights”, Quanell X said. “We don’t need somebody from the outside coming in with guns, who historically have not been friends of our community.”
KPRC reported that both sides were planning to meet on Wednesday to discuss Saturday’s rally.
