Road repairs complete in Fremont County

Workers in Fremont County finished repairing damage Wednesday to County Road 28, also known as Road Gulch, which had been temporarily closed because of recent flash floods.

A 4-mile dirt stretch of the road was washed out in several places. Dump trucks deposited fresh dirt while a grader smoothed it out.

The road is in a low-lying area parallel to a creek, which made the road vulnerable to flood damage. The rushing water tore out drainage pipes, clogged or knocked down fence lines and bent utility markers.

“It’s the worst I’ve seen here since 1986,” said one worker.

Workers also installed boulders and rocks in the creek bends to reduce erosion and keep flooding off the road.

Jamie Kelly, a resident of the area for 14 years, said the temporary closure meant a 20-mile detour to and from work.

“But we don’t mind,” she said. “I’d rather have this happen than fire.”

Drivers use the road as a shortcut between Highway 69 to the west and U.S. 50 to the northeast.

Workers also repaired damage on county roads 4 and 47 near Howard.
