Police: Shot fired after shoplifting attempt, teen facing attempted murder charge

Colorado Springs Police say a 17-year-old will face attempted murder charges after a shot was fired following an attempted shoplifting at a southeast side grocery store.

The incident happened at the Safeway near the intersection of N. Circle Dr. and E. Yampa St. on Tuesday, July 29, 2014.

Police say they are questioning a total of three juvenile suspects in connection to the attempted shoplifting incident. They say the 17-year-old fired a shot toward the store after being confronted by a loss prevention officer.

Police say the would-be shoplifters ran to an apartment complex in the 3000 block of De Cortez St., which is across the street from the Safeway. The suspects tried to hide in one of the units at the complex, but police found them.

Police say employees at the Safeway recognized the 17-year-old from a previous shoplifting incident.

Investigators are now trying to find the gun that was fired in this case. They say they believe the teen tossed it while he was running away from the store.
