Monument man killed in crash in I-25 construction zone

A Monument man was killed in a two-car crash in a construction zone on Interstate 25 in Colorado Springs.

Colorado State Patrol reports it happened around 1:30 a.m. near the Academy exit on I-25.

At the time, two of the three northbound lanes were closed, with just the left lane open for traffic. The speed limit had also been reduced to 55 miles per hour.

CSP reports a Ford truck in the left lane swerved partially into the middle lane, knocking down traffic cones.

A Chevrolet TCS construction truck was stopped in the construction zone in the middle lane.

The Ford rear-ended the construction truck, and the Ford spun and rolled twice. The driver of the Ford was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was not wearing his seat belt.

He’s been identified as a 36-year-old from Monument. His name has not yet been released.

Neither the driver nor the passenger in the construction truck was hurt.

Alcohol and speed are being investigated as factors in the crash.
