Judge refuses to halt gay marriages in Denver

A judge is refusing to halt gay marriages in Denver.

District Court Judge C. Scott Crabtree on Monday rejected a request by Colorado Attorney General John Suthers to stop Denver’s clerk from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples. The Denver clerk took the action late last week after another judge had allowed Boulder’s clerk to continue issuing same sex marriage licenses there.

Crabtree had ruled in a separate case last week that Colorado’s voter-approved gay marriage ban is unconstitutional. But he put his ruling on hold pending appeal. Suthers argued that Denver’s actions effectively violated that hold. But Crabtree ruled Monday that he did not have a reason to stop the Denver licenses.
