Hikers, bikers in Springs on high alert after two lightning-caused deaths at Rocky Mountain National Park

After the lightning-caused deaths of two people at Rocky Mountain National Park earlier this week, hikers and bikers along trails in Colorado Springs are worried about lightning strikes at state parks in Southern Colorado.

Cyclist Julianna Hill rode through the hills of Cheyenne Mountain State Park on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s always a concern in the summertime in Colorado,” Hill said. “I watch the clouds and if it gets dark, I’ll turn around and go.”

“You’re limited if you’re out in the open as to what your options are,” hiker David Bayuk said.

Bayuk, 61, believes the chances of getting struck by lightning are so small, he often doesn’t think about that possibility when hiking in the mountains.

“The odds of getting hit by lighting are minuscule,” he said.
