Boy Scouts return to ranch after being evacuated because of flash flood

The Spanish Peaks Boy Scout Ranch was evacuated Tuesday (7/8/14) morning because of flash flooding in the area. The flash flood was reported at 3:15 a.m.

Huerfano County Emergency Management officials say Bear Creek overflowed because of rain. Two buildings at the camp were damaged.

Around 100 boy scouts were evacuated from the ranch and taken to the Huerfano County Community Center, where the American Red Cross set up an evacuation shelter.

The scouts left the shelter to return to the camp at around 1 p.m.

KRDO NewsChannel 13’s Bonnie Silkman reports that some of the campers scrambled to the roofs of vehicles and buildings to escape the fast moving water.

County Road 340 was closed to public access just past Shangri La. It’s now open.

The same camp was evacuated last summer due to the East Peak Wildfire.

Most of the campers are from out of state. Many are from Kansas.
